Haley: Oh, hey Timothy! I recently read your essay that touched on the discrepancy between how men and woman are depicted in sports media. It was very compelling! Timothy Curry: Thanks! Do you feel like you have noticed any of the gender inequalities I talked about? Haley: Definitely, especially as a woman, I notice how we are immensely underrepresented in both amateur and professional sports. I also feel that we are assumed to be inferior in almost all aspects of the athletic world due to the power of social media and societal prejudice. Timothy Curry: Yes, I agree, as â€Å"Research has demonstrated that hegemonic masculinity and emphasized femininity are reinforced for sport audiences by the differential use of language concerning and the†¦show more content†¦While images can alter an individual’s views, I think that when people actually hear and see famous newscasters and reporters encouraging and glorifying male stereotypes it is much easier to internalize and accept them. Timothy Curry: I completely agree. It is a big problem that the media has so much control over spreading gender stereotypes, as the images and information they put out effects our perceptions of gender not only in sports, but also in every day life. Haley: I agree. Also, I think that this inequality is enhanced due to the dominating popularity of attending male sports. Although I am against the blatant sexism in media, I still feel like I would attend men’s sporting events over women’s due to the mere fact that more people follow men’s sports, thus they attract bigger crowds and are more exciting. Timothy Curry: Yeah, that makes sense. Haley: It’s sad because this difference in supporters will only cause the gender inequality in sports to continue because it is difficult to attract the same crowds to women’s games when they already receive so little publicity and hype. Also, I noticed that in your essay you spoke a lot about two different types of sports: power and performance and pleasure and participation.
